What does a lactate threshold test measure?
A lactate threshold test measures blood lactate concentration during progressively harder exercise. This helps identify your aerobic threshold, anaerobic threshold and personalised training zones.
What is lactate threshold?
Lactate threshold refers to the point at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood faster than your body can clear it. Understanding this threshold helps you train at the right intensities for endurance, pacing and performance.
Is lactate threshold testing useful for runners?
Yes. Lactate threshold testing is especially useful for runners who want more accurate training zones, better pacing strategy and a clearer understanding of how to train for events such as 10km races, half marathons, marathons and triathlons.
Is this only for endurance athletes?
No. While lactate threshold testing is commonly used by endurance athletes, it can also benefit HYROX athletes, team sport athletes and anyone looking to improve athletic performance and train more effectively.
How long does the test take?
The full session takes approximately 60 minutes, including setup, testing, recovery intervals, and an initial debrief.
What does the test involve?
You’ll complete a progressive exercise test made up of 4-minute stages with 1-minute recovery intervals between stages. Blood lactate and perceived effort are measured throughout the test at 1 minute rest intervals. Heart rate is monitored throughout.
How many stages will I complete?
Most individuals complete approximately 9–11 stages, depending on their fitness level, testing goals and how they respond during the assessment.
How should I prepare?
Avoid strenuous exercise, high-intensity training or competition for 24 hours before your test. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours, maintain normal hydration and dietary habits, and eat a light meal 3–4 hours before testing. Avoid caffeine, coffee, tea, energy drinks, pre-workout supplements and sugary drinks 2–3 hours before the test.
What should I bring?
Bring appropriate running shoes or footwear for your testing modality, comfortable exercise clothing, a bottle of plain water, and a change of clothes if you would like to shower afterwards. Shower facilities and towels are available.
Will I receive my results on the day?
You’ll receive a brief overview immediately after the test. A full report, including thresholds, training zones and recommendations, will be sent by email after detailed analysis.
How often should I retest?
Retesting every 3–6 months is recommended if you want to monitor progress, evaluate training effectiveness and update your training zones as your fitness improves.
Is this a medical test?
No. Lactate Threshold Testing at UFIT is a performance assessment, not a medical diagnostic test. It is designed to support training, performance and exercise planning.
Is the test safe?
The test is progressive and controlled. Intensity increases gradually, and the session is supervised throughout. The test stops at your limit, not beyond it.
What is your cancellation policy?
We require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Appointments cancelled or missed with less than 24 hours’ notice will forfeit the full appointment fee, and all purchases are final.
