Understanding Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common issue, often stemming from various factors, such as sports injuries, arthritis, and overtraining. Fortunately, physiotherapy for hip pain can significantly ease discomfort and aid recovery.

The hip joint is a critical structure, supporting your body weight, enabling movement, and maintaining balance. As one of the largest joints in your body, it can experience pain from diverse sources.

This discomfort may be localised around the hip joint, felt in the thigh, or it may radiate to your lower back and groin. Common conditions contributing to hip pain include Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAIS), gluteal tendinopathy, and sports-related groin pain.

It’s essential to understand the underlying causes of the condition to identify options to address and manage it. Whether your hip pain is due to acute trauma, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like arthritis, addressing it promptly through hip pain physiotherapy can mitigate further complications and restore quality of life.

Causes of Hip Pain

Arthritis

Arthritis is a broad term encompassing conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. These conditions cause inflammation within the hip joint, leading to persistent pain, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion.

Each type of arthritis affects the joint differently, but most of the pain can be managed with the help of a physiotherapist.

Hip Bursitis

Hip bursitis refers to the inflammation of the bursae, which are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion your hip joint.

This condition typically causes localised pain and swelling, often aggravated by repetitive movements or prolonged pressure. The inflammation can make everyday activities uncomfortable.

Tendinitis and Muscle Strains

Tendinitis involves the inflammation of tendons, which connect muscles to bones. Meanwhile, muscle strains are injuries to the muscle fibres themselves.

Both can occur around the hip due to overuse or sudden injury, resulting in pain, stiffness, and discomfort. In such cases, physio for hip flexor issues may be beneficial.

Hip Fractures and Dislocations

Hip fractures and dislocations are serious injuries often resulting from significant trauma or accidents, such as falls or direct impacts.

A hip fracture involves a break in the femur, while a dislocation means the ball of the hip joint comes out of its socket. Both cause severe pain and immediately limit your mobility, often requiring urgent medical attention. Subsequently, hip pain physiotherapy may aid healing.

Hip Labral Tear

A hip labral tear involves the ring of cartilage, known as the labrum, that surrounds the outer rim of your hip joint socket. This tear often affects athletes or individuals engaging in repetitive hip movements.

It can cause clicking, catching, or locking sensations, along with deep hip pain.

Sciatica

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which extends from your lower back, through your buttocks, and down your legs.

While originating from the back, sciatic nerve compression can manifest as significant hip pain, along with numbness or tingling in the affected area.

Hip Osteoarthritis

Hip osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint condition where the cartilage cushioning the ends of your bones in the hip gradually wears away.

This progressive deterioration leads to increased friction, causing chronic pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility in your hip joint.

Hip Impingement

Hip impingement, or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), occurs when there is abnormal contact between the ball and socket of the hip joint.

This friction or pressure can damage the joint over time, leading to deep hip pain, particularly during activities that involve bending or rotating the hip.

Hip Replacement

A hip replacement is a surgical procedure where a damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial one. This is often necessary due to severe arthritis, fracture, or other conditions causing debilitating pain that hasn't responded to non-surgical approaches.

Post-surgery physiotherapy is crucial for managing hip pain and regaining mobility.

Symptoms of Hip Pain

1

Inner Hip Pain

You might experience deep pain within the hip joint, typically stemming from bones or cartilage. This often indicates a need for physiotherapy for hip pain.

2

Outer Hip Pain

Pain on the outer part of the hip often points to problems with the muscles or tendons surrounding the joint. This can usually be addressed with physio for hip flexor issues.

3

Groin Pain

Discomfort in the groin area frequently signals an underlying issue within the hip joint itself. Given the close proximity, this can indicate a need for a physiotherapist for hip pain.

4

Lower Back Radiating Pain

Sometimes, pain from the hip can spread to the lower back or groin. This referred pain suggests an issue between the hip joint and spinal structures.

5

Buttock Pain

Discomfort in the buttocks, often related to the muscles or nerves connected to the hip, may also signal an issue in the hip. A physiotherapist for hip pain may be able to help pinpoint the issue.

6

Thigh Pain

Pain radiating down into the thigh often indicates problems with the muscles or tendons around the hip.

Hip Pain Physiotherapy Options May Include

Physio - Osteo - HipLower back

Manual Therapy

Your physiotherapist for hip pain may employ hands-on techniques, such as soft tissue massage and gentle joint mobilisations. These methods aim to reduce muscle tension, improve joint movement, and alleviate your discomfort.

Physio - Dry Needling - Hip Pain

Dry Needling

Dry needling involves inserting fine acupuncture needles into or near muscle trigger points. This technique can help stimulate muscles, prompting them to release tension. In turn, the process relieves pain and improves movement.

Physio - Exercices - Hip Pain

Rehabilitative Exercises

Your physiotherapist will guide you in selecting and performing appropriate mobility, strengthening, and stability exercises. These targeted movements help you to restore full function in your hip while strengthening the hip flexor.

Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy

Depending on your condition, your physiotherapist might suggest advanced therapies like Shockwave Therapy to complement other methods. This can help to further manage persistent hip pain.

Hear From Our Physiotherapy Clients

Decided to go to physio after having constant bad headaches and numbing pain on my right shoulder all the way to my hand.

Been working with Dean for two months now to work on my issues and strengthen my shoulders. Can confidently say that I've gotten stronger and I haven't had any headache or numbing pain for a while now! Dean is very friendly, empathetic, and knowledgeable to find solutions to your pain point. He works with you so that your recovery is sustainable.

UFIT is conveniently located in Club St with great facilities. Would definitely recommend UFIT and Dean as physiotherapist (especially if your insurance covers it!)

UFIT @ Club Street has very clean facilities, and its staff are professional and friendly. My physiotherapist Vik is patient and professional, and can explain concepts well in layman terms. Thanks to him, I have been seeing clear improvements in my injured knee. Extremely satisfied with my experience here and would definitely recommend people to try out their services.

I have been consulting with Vik from UFIT Club Street for a couple of months now. There has been remarkable improvement to my condition and I have now been able to go back to an active lifestyle.

Vik is very methodical in his approach and uses a combination of massage, stretching and strength training to trigger recovery. He truly cares about clients - this is quite evident from the prep work and thinking he had already done prior to each session.

One thing that stands out is that Vik does not carpet bomb clients with exercises and treatments. He spends a lot of time diagnosing exactly which muscle group is injured and then focuses effort on treating those.

Highly recommended and grateful for the support.

I injured the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus in my knee around 2 months ago, and on our first meeting, Nada was very thorough in assessing the damage, from pain to mobility and range of motion.

More than that, she understands that as a final goal, I want to get back to training in the sport I love, and her exercise program for me is tailored to that. The exercises she has introduced me to in the past 2 months were progressive and based on what I could commit to based on my injury, from initial exercises focusing on strength, to stability, range of motion, and finally dynamic and lateral movements. At no time did I feel uncomfortable however, as she paid close attention to how my knee held up doing the exercises, and would tailor them accordingly depending on my progress.

In the past 2 months, not only has my knee appeared to make an almost full recovery, but both my legs are actually stronger and more stable than even before my injury. Am really appreciative for this!

Such a positive experience at this clinic, can not rate highly enough - have been going regularly for 6+ months. The staff know their sh*t, are incredibly professional and friendly which is why I keep coming back.

I originally started seeing Gaya (physio) for pain management with my back which she quickly identified as linking back to ankle injury/surgery 6+ years ago. Gaya is ruthless in her technique but she knows what she's doing and felt so good after her sessions.

I soon then started seeing Lucy Warren (physio, pilates rehab specialist) who developed a rehab program to not only strengthen my back/core but help with realignment and strengthening of many muscles that had weakened over time as a result of this injury and have since seen great improvement in not only my back but overall wellbeing.

Have been coming to UFIT one-north and seeing Sahail Malik for various sports-related injuries. I appreciate that each session is systematic and specifically tailored to my needs. From assessment, to rehab, to long-term strengthening and injury prevention; Sahail is knowledgeable and ensures everything we do has the highest impact and relevance for me. Aside from the physical aspect of the physiotherapy, I also appreciate getting to learn a lot about sports rehab and overall well-being with each visit.

The atmosphere here is great and everyone is very welcoming. I highly recommend UFIT and Sahail for your physiotherapy needs!

I’ve been training here with Dean for about couple of months now. Initially went in to rehabilitate from my bike accident that injured my shoulder. Not only did he help me recover but strengthen my upper body to a stage I’ve never been before!! Super happy about the results and genuinely having fun at the sessions.

+ the shower facilities are best I’ve seen all around the world. Can easily take a shower and go about your day, which is a huge plus.

I am currently doing my physiotherapy with Dean. I went to him for chronic backaches. I wasn't able to stand up for too long without feeling the urge to bend and arch my back. Also, I can't sit for too long after which I have problem straightening my back. Dean has been very patient and able to pin point the correct spots which we began to work on. Thanks to him, my conditions have been improved greatly!

Experience was great, from the reception to the treatments. My physio, Nada was professional and detailed in diagnosing my problems. We had a structured programme across a few months that helped me change my bad posture habits and strength my body. These exercises are simple enough to execute everyday and it makes a whole lot of difference. Glad to say I'm finally rid of the pain I had!

Frequently Asked Questions About Hip Pain Physiotherapy

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy for hip pain?

No, you do not need a referral to see a physio for your hip pain. Our physio clinic is home to first-contact practitioners trained to assess your condition and screen for any issues that may require a doctor's attention. However, we advise checking your insurance policy, as some providers require a doctor's referral for claims.

Is an X-ray required for a hip physiotherapy assessment?

An X-ray isn't always needed for a hip pain physiotherapy assessment. Your physiotherapist will typically conduct a thorough physical examination first to assess your condition.

Thereafter, they will then determine if further imaging, such as an X-ray or CT scan, is necessary.

Is physiotherapy safe for hip pain in all ages?

Yes, physiotherapy for hip pain is widely considered safe and effective for individuals across age groups, including young children and older adults. The process is always tailored to suit individual needs and health conditions.

Likewise, physio for neck pain and other areas are also viable options for various ages.

Is physiotherapy effective for both acute and chronic hip pain?

Yes, physiotherapy is an effective option for both acute (sudden) and chronic (long-lasting) pain

We recommend booking a consultation so our physiotherapists can assess your specific hip condition and recommend the best approach for you.

What can I do at home during recovery from hip pain?

Focus on getting adequate rest while you recover at home. Additionally, try gentle exercises to improve hip mobility and strength, as advised by your physiotherapist.

To manage pain, consider over-the-counter relievers and heat or cold therapy, if approved by your healthcare provider.

How long does it take to recover from hip injuries with physiotherapy? The time it takes to recover varies based on the severity of your injury and other individual factors. However, many hip injuries respond well to physiotherapy, with mild conditions generally improving in three weeks while more severe cases take around four to six weeks.
How soon can I return to daily activities after hip pain physiotherapy?

The timeline for returning to daily activities depends on your specific injury and how you respond to physiotherapy.

Generally, individuals begin to gradually return to normal activities within six weeks to three months, while full recovery may take six to 12 months. In the meantime, some activities may initially require modification as you ease back into your routine.

Will my hip injury recur after physiotherapy? While recurrence can sometimes happen with hip injuries, physiotherapy significantly helps reduce this risk.
