Understanding Shoulder Pain & Injuries

Shoulder injuries are a prevalent and often debilitating issue that affects a significant portion of the population. The shoulder joint, known for its remarkable mobility and flexibility as a ball-and-socket joint, allows for a wide range of motions essential for daily activities and sports.

However, this complexity also renders it vulnerable to various injuries and conditions that can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced functionality. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for shoulder injuries is crucial for effective management and recovery.

Through targeted physiotherapy, our goal is to identify the source of your shoulder pain and create an effective management plan. Whether caused by acute trauma, repetitive strain, or degenerative conditions like arthritis, addressing shoulder pain promptly can mitigate further complications and restore quality of life.

Common Types of Shoulder Injuries

Fractures

A fracture can be a break in the collarbone, upper arm bone, or shoulder blade. Post-immobilisation, a custom physio program is essential to safely restore movement and strength.

Frozen Shoulder

Known as adhesive capsulitis, this condition involves severe stiffness and shoulder pain. Our physiotherapy approach applies more gentle, targeted exercises to gradually restore mobility and function.

Shoulder Impingement & Rotator Cuff Injuries

This common cause of shoulder pain occurs when rotator cuff tendons are pinched. Our approach to physiotherapy for shoulder pain aims to reduce inflammation and improve mechanics.

Shoulder Labrum Tear

A tear in the labrum—the cartilage supporting your shoulder’s ball-and-socket joint—can cause instability and shoulder pain. Physiotherapy focuses on strengthening surrounding muscles to improve stability.

Shoulder Tendinitis & Bursitis

Inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) or bursae (bursitis) from overuse or poor mechanics causes shoulder pain. Our physio program aims to manage inflammation and restore proper movement.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy after shoulder surgeries such as Bankart Repair and Acromioplasty is essential for a guided, structured program to safely regain shoulder mobility, strength and stability.

Causes of Shoulder Injuries

Acute Trauma Falls, accidents, or direct blows to the shoulder can cause fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue injuries, leading to rapid onset of pain and dysfunction.
Overuse or Repetitive Motions Repetitive activities or overuse, especially without proper conditioning or rest, can lead to conditions like tendinitis and bursitis. These inflammatory conditions may present with pain, swelling, and movement limitations in the shoulder joint.
Degenerative Conditions (Arthritis) Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. These conditions typically worsen with age and overuse.
Improper Lifting Techniques Lifting heavy objects with poor technique can put undue stress on the shoulder joint and surrounding muscles, leading to strains, sprains, and other injuries.
Prolonged periods of immobility Spending prolonged periods in slouched or hunched positions without much movement can contribute to muscle imbalances and increased strain on the shoulder joint. This can contribute to pain and dysfunction over time.

Symptoms of Shoulder Pain

1

Stiffness or pain that limits arm movement

2

Feeling of shoulder instability or that it might pop out of the socket

3

Reduced strength in the shoulder affecting normal activities

4

Intense or prolonged pain lasting more than 2 to 4 weeks

5

Sudden swelling, redness, or discoloration around the shoulder

6

Weakness or numbness in the arm or hand

Decided to go to physio after having constant bad headaches and numbing pain on my right shoulder all the way to my hand.

Been working with Dean for two months now to work on my issues and strengthen my shoulders. Can confidently say that I've gotten stronger and I haven't had any headache or numbing pain for a while now! Dean is very friendly, empathetic, and knowledgeable to find solutions to your pain point. He works with you so that your recovery is sustainable.

UFIT is conveniently located in Club St with great facilities. Would definitely recommend UFIT and Dean as physiotherapist (especially if your insurance covers it!)

UFIT @ Club Street has very clean facilities, and its staff are professional and friendly. My physiotherapist Vik is patient and professional, and can explain concepts well in layman terms. Thanks to him, I have been seeing clear improvements in my injured knee. Extremely satisfied with my experience here and would definitely recommend people to try out their services.

I have been consulting with Vik from UFIT Club Street for a couple of months now. There has been remarkable improvement to my condition and I have now been able to go back to an active lifestyle.

Vik is very methodical in his approach and uses a combination of massage, stretching and strength training to trigger recovery. He truly cares about clients - this is quite evident from the prep work and thinking he had already done prior to each session.

One thing that stands out is that Vik does not carpet bomb clients with exercises and treatments. He spends a lot of time diagnosing exactly which muscle group is injured and then focuses effort on treating those.

Highly recommended and grateful for the support.

Have been coming to UFIT one-north and seeing Sahail Malik for various sports-related injuries. I appreciate that each session is systematic and specifically tailored to my needs. From assessment, to rehab, to long-term strengthening and injury prevention; Sahail is knowledgeable and ensures everything we do has the highest impact and relevance for me. Aside from the physical aspect of the physiotherapy, I also appreciate getting to learn a lot about sports rehab and overall well-being with each visit.

The atmosphere here is great and everyone is very welcoming. I highly recommend UFIT and Sahail for your physiotherapy needs!

I’ve been training here with Dean for about couple of months now. Initially went in to rehabilitate from my bike accident that injured my shoulder. Not only did he help me recover but strengthen my upper body to a stage I’ve never been before!! Super happy about the results and genuinely having fun at the sessions.

+ the shower facilities are best I’ve seen all around the world. Can easily take a shower and go about your day, which is a huge plus.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shoulder Pain Physiotherapy

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy for shoulder pain?

No, you do not need a referral to see a physio for your shoulder pain. Our physio clinic is home to first-contact practitioners trained to assess your condition and screen for any issues that may require a doctor's attention. However, we advise checking your insurance policy, as some providers require a doctor's referral for claims.

Is an X-ray required for a shoulder physiotherapy assessment?

No, an X-ray or other scan is not usually required before your initial physiotherapy assessment. Our physio will conduct a thorough clinical examination to diagnose the issue.

If a scan or further tests are required, your physiotherapist will indicate this to you and also be able to provide the context of what may change as a result of getting the test.

Is physiotherapy safe for all ages with shoulder pain? Yes, physiotherapy is a safe and adaptable treatment for people of all ages. Our practitioners tailor every management plan, using specific techniques and exercises appropriate for the individual’s age, condition, and overall health to ensure a safe approach to managing their shoulder pain.
Is physiotherapy effective for both acute and chronic shoulder pain?

Yes, the approach is simply different. For acute shoulder pain (a recent injury), physiotherapy focuses on managing pain and promoting healing. For chronic pain, the focus shifts to addressing underlying causes, improving movement patterns, and building strength in the shoulders for long-term management.

Physiotherapy is a holistic therapy that aims to discover the root cause and relieve pain/stiffness, improve movement and optimise health and wellbeing.

At UFIT, our key pillar is the use of exercise therapy and education to empower patients to take control of their health and recovery. We consider all factors that may affect your recovery: movement, sleep, nutrition, mindset and rest.

How long does it take to recover from shoulder injuries with physiotherapy? Recovery time is highly individual and depends on many factors, including the nature of your injury, your overall health, and your adherence to the plan. After your first 1-2 physiotherapy sessions, your physio will have a better understanding of your shoulder pain and can typically provide a clearer prognosis and treatment timeline.
What can I do at home during recovery from shoulder pain? The most important thing is to follow the personalised exercise program and activity modification advice given by your physio. This often involves balancing rest with prescribed movements and avoiding activities that aggravate your shoulder. Your active participation is key to a successful recovery.
How soon can I return to daily activities after shoulder physiotherapy? Returning to your daily activities and sports is a primary goal of physiotherapy for shoulder pain. This happens gradually and is guided by your physio based on your progress. Your return-to-activity timeline will depend on achieving specific recovery milestones, such as improved range of motion and strength.
Will my shoulder injury recur after physiotherapy? A major goal of physiotherapy is to reduce the risk of your shoulder pain recurring. By identifying and addressing the root causes of the problem—such as muscle imbalances or poor movement habits—we empower you with the knowledge and strength for long-term shoulder health.
