Personalised physiotherapy for knee pain to relieve your discomfort, restore mobility, and help you return to the activities you love.
Understanding Knee Pain
Knee pain is a common issue that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. They can result from sudden trauma, such as a meniscus tear or anterior cruciate ligament tear, or from the cumulative wear and tear associated with everyday activities like walking, bending, standing, and lifting. These injuries are not limited to athletes; they affect people of all ages and activity levels.
However, athletes who run or engage in sports that involve jumping or quick pivoting are particularly prone to knee problems due to the high-stress demands placed on their knees.
Knee pain, whether due to injury or the natural ageing process, can range from a mild nuisance to a debilitating condition that hampers daily activities. It's essential to understand the signs and symptoms of knee injuries to seek appropriate treatment and prevent further damage.
Common Types of Knee Injuries
The knee is a complex joint, and different types of injuries affect distinct structures. Understanding the specific injury is the first step toward effective rehabilitation with knee pain physiotherapy.Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries
The ACL is a ligament deep inside your knee that keeps it stable. It's often injured during sports that involve sudden direction changes or awkward landings. You might hear or feel a "pop" during the injury, followed by swelling and a feeling that the knee is unstable or might give out.
Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injuries
The PCL is another key ligament that works with the ACL. It's stronger and injured less often, usually from a direct impact to the front of your bent knee, like hitting a dashboard in a car accident or a hard fall in sports.
Collateral Ligament Injuries
These are the ligaments on the sides of your knee (inner and outer) that prevent it from shifting sideways. They are typically injured by a direct hit to the side of the knee, which is common in contact sports like rugby or soccer.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)
This is a common overuse injury, especially for runners. The IT band is a long strip of tissue that runs down the outside of your thigh. When it's overused, it can rub against your knee bone, causing friction and sharp pain on the outside of the knee.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Commonly known as "runner's knee," this is pain felt at the front of your knee, around the kneecap. It often happens when the kneecap doesn't glide smoothly in its groove due to muscle imbalances or overuse. This is a very common condition that benefits greatly from physiotherapy for the knee.
Causes of Knee Pain or Injuries
Are you experiencing any of these symptoms?
Hearing popping or crunching noises when moving the knee can indicate underlying issues such as cartilage damage or ligament tear.
Difficulty or inability to fully straighten the knee is often a sign of significant injury or damage to the joint structures, such as a meniscus or acl tear injury.
A feeling of weakness in the knee can result from knee ligament injuries or muscle imbalances, making it difficult to perform daily activities.
Swelling around the knee joint, accompanied by stiffness, is a common symptom of inflammation and injury.
A knee that appears red and feels warm to the touch may indicate an infection or severe inflammation, necessitating immediate medical attention.
Knee ligament injuries or muscle imbalances can cause a sensation of instability in the knee, hindering the ability to carry out everyday tasks.
How Physiotherapy Helps with Knee Pain & Injury

Step 1: Thorough Assessment
Through detailed history-taking and clinical examinations, we aim to diagnose the underlying issues resulting in pain or injury.

Step 2: Individualized management plans
Based on the assessment and keeping your goals in mind, we develop a management plan tailored to your needs.
Knee Pain Therapy Options May Include

Manual Therapy
This could be in the form of soft tissue massage and joint mobilisations

Dry Needling
Acupuncture needles are inserted into or near trigger points to stimulate the muscles, causing them to contract or twitch, which helps relieve pain and improve movement

Rehabilitative Exercises
Your physiotherapist will guide you in selecting the appropriate mobility, strengthening or stability exercises to aid in your recovery

Shockwave Therapy
Depending on your condition, our physiotherapists may suggest other forms of therapies to help your recovery

I highly recommend Nada at Ufit for injury-related physio and rehab.
I injured the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus in my knee around 2 months ago, and on our first meeting, Nada was very thorough in assessing the damage, from pain to mobility and range of motion.
More than that, she understands that as a final goal, I want to get back to training in the sport I love, and her exercise program for me is tailored to that. The exercises she has introduced me to in the past 2 months were progressive and based on what I could commit to based on my injury, from initial exercises focusing on strength, to stability, range of motion, and finally dynamic and lateral movements. At no time did I feel uncomfortable however, as she paid close attention to how my knee held up doing the exercises, and would tailor them accordingly depending on my progress.
In the past 2 months, not only has my knee appeared to make an almost full recovery, but both my legs are actually stronger and more stable than even before my injury. Am really appreciative for this!

Vik is an excellent physiotherapist! At first I was worried my knee injury would affect my chances of joining a jiujitsu competition. He was able to prescribe targeted exercises, dry needling and rehab exercises. I recovered much earlier than expected and have now signed up for my competition. Thank you so much for the expert guidance. In general, it was a very positive experience for me with UFIT and Vik
