Understanding Knee Pain

Knee pain is a common issue that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. They can result from sudden trauma, such as a meniscus tear or anterior cruciate ligament tear, or from the cumulative wear and tear associated with everyday activities like walking, bending, standing, and lifting. These injuries are not limited to athletes; they affect people of all ages and activity levels.

However, athletes who run or engage in sports that involve jumping or quick pivoting are particularly prone to knee problems due to the high-stress demands placed on their knees.

Knee pain, whether due to injury or the natural ageing process, can range from a mild nuisance to a debilitating condition that hampers daily activities. It's essential to understand the signs and symptoms of knee injuries to seek appropriate treatment and prevent further damage.

Common Types of Knee Injuries

The knee is a complex joint, and different types of injuries affect distinct structures. Understanding the specific injury is the first step toward effective rehabilitation with knee pain physiotherapy.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries

The ACL is a ligament deep inside your knee that keeps it stable. It's often injured during sports that involve sudden direction changes or awkward landings. You might hear or feel a "pop" during the injury, followed by swelling and a feeling that the knee is unstable or might give out.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injuries

The PCL is another key ligament that works with the ACL. It's stronger and injured less often, usually from a direct impact to the front of your bent knee, like hitting a dashboard in a car accident or a hard fall in sports.

Collateral Ligament Injuries

These are the ligaments on the sides of your knee (inner and outer) that prevent it from shifting sideways. They are typically injured by a direct hit to the side of the knee, which is common in contact sports like rugby or soccer.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS)

This is a common overuse injury, especially for runners. The IT band is a long strip of tissue that runs down the outside of your thigh. When it's overused, it can rub against your knee bone, causing friction and sharp pain on the outside of the knee.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Commonly known as "runner's knee," this is pain felt at the front of your knee, around the kneecap. It often happens when the kneecap doesn't glide smoothly in its groove due to muscle imbalances or overuse. This is a very common condition that benefits greatly from physiotherapy for the knee.

Causes of Knee Pain or Injuries

Trauma Injuries such as a ruptured ligament, commonly known as an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, or torn cartilage, like a meniscus tear, are prevalent among athletes and individuals involved in high-impact activities and sports that require sudden change of directions.
Repetitive Overuse Over time, the knee joint can deteriorate due to repetitive movements and stress, especially if the joint & muscles are not adequately conditioned.
Sports Injuries Athletes, especially those involved in sports requiring frequent jumping or sudden directional changes, are at a higher risk of knee injuries. The intense physical demands can result in acute injuries or chronic knee problems like runner's knee.
Medical Conditions Conditions such as arthritis, gout, and infections can also cause knee pain. Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, involves the gradual wearing away of knee cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness. Gout, a type of arthritis, can cause sudden and severe knee pain due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joint.

Are you experiencing any of these symptoms?

1
Popping or Crunching Sounds

Hearing popping or crunching noises when moving the knee can indicate underlying issues such as cartilage damage or ligament tear.

2
Inability to Straighten the Knee

Difficulty or inability to fully straighten the knee is often a sign of significant injury or damage to the joint structures, such as a meniscus or acl tear injury.

3
Pain and weakness

A feeling of weakness in the knee can result from knee ligament injuries or muscle imbalances, making it difficult to perform daily activities.

4
Swelling and Stiffness

Swelling around the knee joint, accompanied by stiffness, is a common symptom of inflammation and injury.

5
Redness and Warmth

A knee that appears red and feels warm to the touch may indicate an infection or severe inflammation, necessitating immediate medical attention.

6
Instability

Knee ligament injuries or muscle imbalances can cause a sensation of instability in the knee, hindering the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Hear From Our Clients

UFIT @ Club Street has very clean facilities, and its staff are professional and friendly. My physiotherapist Vik is patient and professional, and can explain concepts well in layman terms. Thanks to him, I have been seeing clear improvements in my injured knee. Extremely satisfied with my experience here and would definitely recommend people to try out their services.

I highly recommend Nada at Ufit for injury-related physio and rehab.

I injured the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus in my knee around 2 months ago, and on our first meeting, Nada was very thorough in assessing the damage, from pain to mobility and range of motion.

More than that, she understands that as a final goal, I want to get back to training in the sport I love, and her exercise program for me is tailored to that. The exercises she has introduced me to in the past 2 months were progressive and based on what I could commit to based on my injury, from initial exercises focusing on strength, to stability, range of motion, and finally dynamic and lateral movements. At no time did I feel uncomfortable however, as she paid close attention to how my knee held up doing the exercises, and would tailor them accordingly depending on my progress.

In the past 2 months, not only has my knee appeared to make an almost full recovery, but both my legs are actually stronger and more stable than even before my injury. Am really appreciative for this!

Vik is an excellent physiotherapist! At first I was worried my knee injury would affect my chances of joining a jiujitsu competition. He was able to prescribe targeted exercises, dry needling and rehab exercises. I recovered much earlier than expected and have now signed up for my competition. Thank you so much for the expert guidance. In general, it was a very positive experience for me with UFIT and Vik

Frequently Asked Questions About Knee Pain Physiotherapy

Do I need a referral for physiotherapy for knee pain?

No, you do not need a referral to see a physio for your knee pain. Our physio clinic is home to first-contact practitioners trained to assess your condition and screen for any issues that may require a doctor's attention. However, we advise checking your insurance policy, as some providers require a doctor's referral for claims.

Is an X-ray required for a knee physiotherapy assessment? An X-ray is not typically required before your initial physiotherapy session. Our physiotherapists can assess most knee issues through a physical examination and clinical testing. If imaging is needed to rule out conditions like a fracture, we’ll guide you to seek the appropriate medical referral.
Is physiotherapy safe for all ages with knee pain? Yes, physiotherapy is safe and effective for all age groups. Care plans are tailored to the individual—whether it’s low-impact exercises for older adults with arthritis or more dynamic rehabilitation for young athletes recovering from sports injuries.
Is physiotherapy effective for both acute and chronic knee pain? Yes. For acute injuries, physiotherapy helps reduce pain and inflammation, while protecting the joint during early healing. For chronic pain, the focus is on strengthening, correcting movement patterns, and building long-term strategies for relief and prevention.
How long does it take to recover from knee injuries with physiotherapy? Recovery timelines vary based on the type of injury, its severity, and individual factors like age, fitness level, and therapy adherence. After your assessment, your physiotherapist will provide a clear plan with expected milestones tailored to your condition.
What can I do at home during recovery from knee pain? Your physiotherapist will provide a home exercise program that includes stretching, strengthening, and mobility work to support recovery between sessions. You’ll also receive guidance on activity modification and self-care strategies such as icing to manage symptoms effectively.
How soon can I return to daily activities after knee pain physiotherapy? The goal is always to get you back to your normal life as soon as it is safely possible. Many people find relief for daily activities like walking or climbing stairs within a few sessions. Returning to more demanding activities like sports will take longer and will be guided by your physiotherapist, who will ensure you meet specific strength and stability goals before you return, minimising the risk of re-injury.
Will my knee injury recur after physiotherapy? A primary goal of physiotherapy is to significantly reduce the risk of your injury happening again. We help identify and correct the underlying causes, such as muscle imbalances or poor movement patterns. By completing your program, you will not only recover but also gain the strength and knowledge to manage your knee health effectively in the long term.
