Understanding Elbow Pain

Elbow pain refers to discomfort in or around the elbow joint, which may involve bones, muscles, tendons, or ligaments. This joint supports a wide range of daily movements, such as bending, lifting, throwing, and pushing, and is especially vulnerable to strain from repetitive use or injury. Elbow pain may be dull or sharp, constant or triggered by specific motions.

While many causes of elbow pain are not serious, ongoing discomfort should not be ignored. Pain that persists or worsens may signal an underlying issue like tendinitis, arthritis, or a nerve condition, and may require medical attention. Early assessment and therapy can help prevent further damage and support effective recovery.

Common Types of Elbow Injuries

Several elbow conditions arise from repetitive strain, overuse, or sudden movements. The most common include:

Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Tennis elbow is a condition caused by inflammation of the tendons attached to the outer part of the elbow (lateral epicondyle). It results from repetitive motions involving the arm and wrist, common in activities like painting, typing, or manual labor—not just tennis. Symptoms include pain and tenderness on the outside of the elbow that can worsen with gripping or lifting.

Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Similar to tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow affects the tendons on the inner side of the elbow (medial epicondyle). It results from repetitive stress or overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons, causing pain on the inside of the elbow, stiffness, and sometimes weakness in the wrist or fingers.

Nursemaid’s Elbow

Nursemaid’s elbow is a common injury in young children caused by a sudden pull or tug on the extended arm, leading to a partial dislocation of the radial head at the elbow joint. It causes the child to hold their arm still and avoid using it due to pain. The condition is usually resolved with a simple, gentle repositioning by a healthcare professional. Preventive care focuses on cautious handling to avoid sudden pulling motions.

Causes of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain can arise from various conditions involving the bones, tendons, nerves, and soft tissues around the joint. Common causes include:
Tendinitis

Tendinitis refers to the inflammation or irritation of the tendons, often resulting from repetitive movements or overuse.

Two common forms are tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), both of which cause pain around the bony parts of the elbow and may radiate into the forearm.

Arthritis Several types of arthritis can affect the elbow joint. Osteoarthritis results from cartilage degeneration over time, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that causes joint inflammation. Both can lead to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion.
Bursitis

Elbow bursitis involves inflammation of the olecranon bursa, a small sac of fluid that cushions the elbow.

This condition can occur due to prolonged pressure, trauma, or infection, and typically presents with noticeable swelling, tenderness, and warmth at the tip of the elbow.

Injuries

Direct trauma or accidents can result in fractures, dislocations, ligament sprains, tendon tears, or muscle strains around the elbow.

These injuries often lead to immediate pain, swelling, limited movement, and sometimes visible deformity.

Overuse

Activities that require frequent arm, wrist, or hand motion—such as typing, lifting, throwing, or racquet sports—can overload the elbow joint and surrounding tissues.

Overuse is a key contributor to chronic conditions like tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.

Trapped Nerves Nerve compression near the elbow can lead to pain, tingling, or numbness. One common condition is ulnar nerve entrapment, also known as cubital tunnel syndrome, where the nerve becomes compressed as it passes through the inner elbow, causing symptoms that may extend into the forearm and hand.

Symptoms of Elbow Pain

Recognising specific symptoms of elbow pain can help guide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate elbow physiotherapy treatment.
1

Elbow Joint
Pain

Pain in or around the elbow joint may range from a dull ache to a sharp or burning sensation. It can occur during rest or worsen with movement, especially during gripping, lifting, or repetitive arm activities.

2

Popping or Clicking
Sensation

You may notice a popping, clicking, or snapping sound when moving your elbow. This could indicate joint instability, tendon movement, or cartilage changes, often associated with overuse or joint degeneration.

3

Tingling & Numbness
Finger

Elbow conditions such as ulnar nerve entrapment can cause tingling, numbness, or a “pins and needles” sensation, particularly in the ring and little fingers. These symptoms suggest nerve involvement and may worsen with bending the elbow for prolonged periods.

4

Swelling &
Inflammation

Visible swelling or puffiness around the elbow can signal inflammation in the soft tissues or fluid buildup in the joint. The area may also feel warm or tender to the touch.

5

Reduced Grip
Strength

Elbow issues can affect the muscles responsible for wrist and hand movement, leading to a noticeable decrease in grip strength. This can make everyday tasks—like opening jars or holding objects—more difficult.

6

Restricted Elbow
Movement

Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the elbow joint can occur, making it challenging to fully bend or straighten the arm. This may result from joint inflammation, muscle tightness, or mechanical obstruction.

How Physiotherapy Helps with Elbow Pain & Injury

Physiotherapy plays a key role in managing elbow pain, restoring mobility, and reducing the risk of recurring injuries. At UFIT, our physiotherapists develop targeted, evidence-based rehabilitation programs tailored to your condition, lifestyle, and recovery goals.

Hear From Our Clients

Decided to go to physio after having constant bad headaches and numbing pain on my right shoulder all the way to my hand.

Been working with Dean for two months now to work on my issues and strengthen my shoulders. Can confidently say that I've gotten stronger and I haven't had any headache or numbing pain for a while now! Dean is very friendly, empathetic, and knowledgeable to find solutions to your pain point. He works with you so that your recovery is sustainable.

UFIT is conveniently located in Club St with great facilities. Would definitely recommend UFIT and Dean as physiotherapist (especially if your insurance covers it!)

UFIT @ Club Street has very clean facilities, and its staff are professional and friendly. My physiotherapist Vik is patient and professional, and can explain concepts well in layman terms. Thanks to him, I have been seeing clear improvements in my injured knee. Extremely satisfied with my experience here and would definitely recommend people to try out their services.

I have been consulting with Vik from UFIT Club Street for a couple of months now. There has been remarkable improvement to my condition and I have now been able to go back to an active lifestyle.

Vik is very methodical in his approach and uses a combination of massage, stretching and strength training to trigger recovery. He truly cares about clients - this is quite evident from the prep work and thinking he had already done prior to each session.

One thing that stands out is that Vik does not carpet bomb clients with exercises and treatments. He spends a lot of time diagnosing exactly which muscle group is injured and then focuses effort on treating those.

Highly recommended and grateful for the support.

Went for a physio therapy session with Nic Tan and it was a lovely experience. I have been suffering with stiffness in my ankle and limited mobility for 4 months ever since I have twisted my ankle. Nic Tan was my assigned physiotherapist and he was very patient and thorough in examining and explaining my condition. Due to his knowledge and professionalism, I found out that there were more issues in affecting the stiffness and mobility. As such, he was able to share a detailed recovery plan which includes strengthening other weakened areas for better and sustainable results. He still went to the extra mile to send me the link to get the right resistance band to do my recovery exercises. It has been 2 months since then and I have regained my ankle mobility. At the same time, my overall strength and flexibility has improved. Highly recommend!

I’ve been training here with Dean for about couple of months now. Initially went in to rehabilitate from my bike accident that injured my shoulder. Not only did he help me recover but strengthen my upper body to a stage I’ve never been before!! Super happy about the results and genuinely having fun at the sessions.

+ the shower facilities are best I’ve seen all around the world. Can easily take a shower and go about your day, which is a huge plus.

I am currently doing my physiotherapy with Dean. I went to him for chronic backaches. I wasn't able to stand up for too long without feeling the urge to bend and arch my back. Also, I can't sit for too long after which I have problem straightening my back. Dean has been very patient and able to pin point the correct spots which we began to work on. Thanks to him, my conditions have been improved greatly!

Experience was great, from the reception to the treatments. My physio, Nada was professional and detailed in diagnosing my problems. We had a structured programme across a few months that helped me change my bad posture habits and strength my body. These exercises are simple enough to execute everyday and it makes a whole lot of difference. Glad to say I'm finally rid of the pain I had!

I highly recommend Nada at Ufit for injury-related physio and rehab.

I injured the lateral collateral ligament and meniscus in my knee around 2 months ago, and on our first meeting, Nada was very thorough in assessing the damage, from pain to mobility and range of motion.

More than that, she understands that as a final goal, I want to get back to training in the sport I love, and her exercise program for me is tailored to that. The exercises she has introduced me to in the past 2 months were progressive and based on what I could commit to based on my injury, from initial exercises focusing on strength, to stability, range of motion, and finally dynamic and lateral movements. At no time did I feel uncomfortable however, as she paid close attention to how my knee held up doing the exercises, and would tailor them accordingly depending on my progress.

Nada is also really cheerful and friendly, not to mention patient and understanding, so I always feel comfortable and assured in my sessions with her.

In the past 2 months, not only has my knee appeared to make an almost full recovery, but both my legs are actually stronger and more stable than even before my injury. Am really appreciative for this!

Such a positive experience at this clinic, can not rate highly enough - have been going regularly for 6+ months. The staff know their sh*t, are incredibly professional and friendly which is why I keep coming back.

I originally started seeing Gaya (physio) for pain management with my back which she quickly identified as linking back to ankle injury/surgery 6+ years ago. Gaya is ruthless in her technique but she knows what she's doing and felt so good after her sessions.

I soon then started seeing Lucy Warren (physio, pilates rehab specialist) who developed a rehab program to not only strengthen my back/core but help with realignment and strengthening of many muscles that had weakened over time as a result of this injury and have since seen great improvement in not only my back but overall wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions about Elbow Pain Physiotherapy

How long does it take to recover from elbow injuries with physiotherapy? Recovery time varies depending on the type and severity of your elbow condition, your age, and how consistently you follow your elbow physiotherapy plan. Some patients see improvement within a few weeks, while others may require longer-term care. Your physiotherapist will provide a realistic timeline based on your individual case.
Is an X-ray required for an elbow physiotherapy assessment? An X-ray is not always necessary for your initial physio for elbow pain sessions. Our physiotherapists can assess most conditions through clinical evaluation. If imaging is needed to rule out fractures or other complications, we’ll advise you to consult a doctor.
Is physiotherapy effective for both acute and chronic elbow pain? Yes. Elbow pain physiotherapy can address both recent injuries and long-standing conditions. For acute injuries, therapy focuses on reducing pain and protecting the joint. For chronic elbow pain, we target the root causes, such as poor biomechanics or overuse, to promote long-term relief.
Do I need a referral for physiotherapy for elbow pain?

No, you do not need a referral to see a physio for your elbow pain. Our physio clinic is home to first-contact practitioners trained to assess your condition and screen for any issues that may require a doctor's attention. However, we advise checking your insurance policy, as some providers require a doctor's referral for claims.

Is physiotherapy safe for all ages with elbow pain? Yes, physiotherapy for elbow pain is suitable for all age groups. Our approach is always tailored to the individual, whether it’s a child with a sports injury or an older adult with arthritis-related elbow discomfort.
What can I do at home during recovery from elbow pain? Your physiotherapist will provide a customised home exercise program, which may include gentle stretches, strengthening movements, and activity modifications. Applying ice or using a brace (if advised) can also help manage symptoms between sessions.
How soon can I return to daily activities after elbow pain physiotherapy? This depends on your condition and progress. Many patients can resume light activities within a few sessions. More strenuous or repetitive tasks may take longer. Your physiotherapist will guide your return safely, based on clear functional milestones.
Will my elbow injury recur after physiotherapy? A key goal of physiotherapy for elbow pain is to reduce the chance of recurrence by addressing the root causes—such as muscle imbalances or improper technique. Completing your physiotherapy sessions and following preventive advice significantly lowers the risk of reinjury.
